About

We are a leading real estate development, construction, and property management company focused on multifamily, mixed-use and hotel development in Oregon, Washington and Arizona. Vertically integrated, Tokola Properties has acted as developer, prime contractor and property manager in twenty-four developments featuring over 2,000 units of multifamily housing, multiple transit oriented mixed-use projects and a hotel.

History

Founded in Portland, Oregon by renowned engineer Al Tokola in 1971, the company originally operated as an engineering and heavy construction firm focused on large scale engineering/construction projects around the globe. In the late 1970’s and earlier 1980’s, the company expanded its business portfolio to include development, construction and management of multifamily housing in Oregon. This new arm of the business grew steadily and over time the company transitioned away from engineering and high-risk heavy construction to focus its full resources on the growth and expansion of its real estate development activities.

In 2004, then President, Dwight Unti, who joined the company in 1982 and helped lead its transition to real estate development, acquired the company from the Tokola family. Upon assuming ownership, Dwight moved rapidly to diversify the company’s real estate activity by product type and location. Urban form, mixed-use development was added to its development portfolio of suburban garden style apartments and the company’s geographic reach was expanded to include Oregon, Washington and Arizona. More recently the company added development of highly customized boutique hotels to its portfolio with its’ first project, The Independence, under construction on the banks of the Willamette River in Independence, Oregon. Two additional boutique hotels are in planning stages including a destination style resort hotel on the Columbia River. A significant portion of the company’s expansion and diversification over the past decade has occurred under terms of public/private partnerships and the company is now a recognized regional leader in the formation and execution of public/private partnerships with numerous completed and active public/private partnerships underway.
